The really right, modern and clean way to load modules in CentOS 5

June 25, 2008 by hairmare

I needed to autoload some modules on some CentOS boxen and had a really hard time finding the most modern way to load them. After having them in /etc/rc.d/rc.local i found that i could also put them into /etc/rc.modules which then helped me find the following lines in /etc/rc.sysinit:

# Load other user-defined modules
for file in /etc/sysconfig/modules/*.modules ; do
[ -x $file ] && $file
done
# Load modules (for backward compatibility with VARs)
if [ -f /etc/rc.modules ]; then
/etc/rc.modules
fi

The cleanest way therefore seems to be like so:

echo “modprobe some_module” > /etc/sysconfig/modules/something.modules
chmod +x /etc/sysconfig/modules/something.modules

This kind of files could even be installed from a RPM without needing any special pre-install/uninstall handling.
This probably also applies to various Flavor of Redhat and Fedora. Personally i prefer gentoos nice modules.autoload file.

Townsville to Cairns

April 9, 2007 by hairmare

After having spent three absolutly relaxing days on Magnetic Island, i moved back to the mainland where i stayed two nights in transit centre backpackers in Townsville. @ 15 AUD a night this has been the cheapest place i’ve stayed in sofar. It wasn’t really clean and the kitchen was quite a mess but i met some good people there and would have stayed longer if i hadn’t already made plans. There were lots of people staying there long-term and i really envied them for there lifestyle, visas and so on. One strange thing remains: I booked my room through the net but upon arriving in townsville my booking had never turned up and i was lucky to get a room anyway (note to self, don’t book hostels through the internet, i cant even find the darn page anymore). On the day i arrived the checkin was only open from noon to 2:30, by chance i got there at about 2:20, checkin closed just after me and some folks that turned up later got quite pissed.

The first night i was there was good friday, that gave me quite a hard time (no bottle shops were open, you had to buy something to eat to get served a beer at restaurants). On easter saturday everything was back to normal and i treated myself to The Museum of Tropical Queensland, two IMAX Movies and the Reef HQ Aquarium. In the evening i stayed at the backpackers and drank some beer with the other guests.

Right now i’m in Cairns and staying @ International Backpackers Hostel. At 22 AUD a night it isn’t really cheap, but you do get a meal. I’ll post some more on the Cairns Nightlife when i’ve checked it out some more.

Backpacking up North from Brisbane

April 3, 2007 by hairmare

i’ve finally done some travelling out of Brisbane (this is the second time i’m in australia, last time i only stayed in brisbane). right now im sitting in magnums backpackers on magnetic island. Magnums used to be called Arkies, so keep that in mind when you where booked in Arkies and need to get of the bus for Magnums!

I started out last week in brisbane and took the coach up to hervey bay (the starting place for most fraser island tours). I stayed in Herey Bay @ Palace Backpackers. From there i went to a 3 day long 4WD tour of Fraser Island. The tour was great fun and the group i was in was really nice and we had lots of fun (the page of one of the guys i met there is over here, so go check it out). We did the standard program as well as some gooning.

After that i was quite happy to catch the night bus up to Airlie Beach where i stayed at Magnums for a night. My next activity was a 3day/3night sailing/diving/snorkeling trip in the Whitsundays on the maxi sailer Spank Me. The trip was really fun even though we had some rough conditions on the 3rd day. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef was more like Deep Sea rescue training ;) Maxi sailing was really fun since i had watched most Alinghi races on the telly when they won America’s Cup. Spank Me was also the first place i ran in to loads of swiss people.

After that i stayed in Airlie beach for another night and went out for some VB with the peeps from Spank Me. I then caught the bus and ferry up to Magnetic Island where i’m staying in a deluxe dorm room (also in a magnums). I still haven’t quite figured out what i’ll do the next few days (i booked 3 nights+food) but i will look into jet skiing round the island.

party down under

March 9, 2007 by hairmare

i’m like ready to confirm my first party here down under (i’m on vacation down under for those who haven’t noticed). i will be going to the Zoo for a concert by The Slits, a UK punk band. i dunno if the other bands playing are for anything…. the evening definitively sounds like a cd buying kind of gig. so if you’re not down under (pretty likely if you’re reading this) hit me for mp3s when i’m back!

yeah & while you’re at it check out there official webpage !

I finally took some time to realize a project thats been on my mind for some time now. After whipping up some PHP Code , resolving some legal issues and writing up some websites, I’m proud to announce The Swiss Party Calendar Synchronizer! The spcs takes data from authorized sources and adds them to social networking sites all over the web. See partycal.wordpress.com for more infos.

PHP Conference 2006

November 7, 2006 by hairmare

meethinks i should do some blogging about the php conference in Frankfurt i´m attending.

The presentations on MySQL will hopefully turn up here sometimes soon. I am also expecting slides on the presentations from Derick Rethans. He did a great job in his presentations regarding the inner workings of PHP.

I just left the Oracle Booth. Ive got four new CDs containing Oracle SW (one is probably a DVD). I think i finally got a way to tell the DBAs@work why i need EZ Connect and why tnsnames is sooooo yesterday.

Finally Matthew Peters showed me how SOA can really work with PHP. The OSOA Project he presented seems to be a really cool way to implement SOA Stuff with PHP.

Did i mention, that tonight is free-beer night? This is fun ;)

me & my blog

October 4, 2006 by hairmare

its kinda hard… Since i know blogshares i’ve been unable to write a blog. Each excursion into the blogosphere leads me right to blogshares where i then waste all my precious blogging time just for gaming.

I should be posting about my newest blogroll addition (here) or the newest usb gadget i found via el reg (lookie here).

Blogging would probably be more fun if i could just come over the urge to post the magical numer of B$7,504,517,856.61 Networth. Please tell me i’m boring you with the fact that end-of-month ranking jumped me from page 10 to page 1 of the overall ranking!
